Frequently Asked Questions
Data update frequency varies by source. Most demographic data is updated annually, while air quality data is updated hourly. Recreation and dining data from Google Places API is updated in real-time, and parking costs from INRIX are updated frequently. We clearly indicate when each data point was last updated on our results pages.
Some areas may have limited data availability due to the specific data sources we use. For example, crime data depends on FBI reporting, and air quality data requires nearby monitoring stations. Recreation and dining data is available nationwide through Google Places API, while parking costs are available in major metropolitan areas through INRIX. We show coverage indicators to help you understand data availability.
Crime data comes from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting program and local police departments. We display rates per 1,000 residents rather than raw counts for fair comparisons. Coverage varies by agency participation in the NIBRS transition.
Currently, we don't offer direct data downloads. However, all our data sources are publicly available and can be accessed directly through their respective APIs and websites, which we link to on our methodology page.
Yes! Our service is completely free.
We calculate crime rates as incidents per 1,000 residents using population data from the U.S. Census Bureau. We compare these rates to state and national averages to provide context. We avoid creating "danger" scores to prevent bias and harm.
Recreation data shows nearby parks, gyms, museums, tourist attractions, stadiums, and aquariums within 1 mile of your location. This data comes from Google Places API and is updated in real-time. We count the number of venues and provide a summary of available recreational facilities.
Dining & Entertainment data shows nearby restaurants, bars, nightclubs, breweries, and live music venues within 1 mile of your location. This data comes from Google Places API and includes cuisine types, venue counts, and entertainment options. The data is updated in real-time to reflect current business listings.
Mobility data includes walk scores, transit scores, bike scores, parking costs, and nearby transit options. We use Walk Score API for walkability ratings, INRIX Parking API for real-time parking costs, and TransitLand API for nearby bus and rail stops. The data helps you understand how easy it is to get around without a car.
The "Last 30 days" trend shows the percentage change in crime incidents compared to the previous 30-day period. The "Year over year" trend shows the percentage change compared to the same period last year. These trends are calculated from FBI UCR data and provide insight into whether crime is increasing or decreasing in your area.
